Using HubPages for Shameless Self Promotion is WRONG

Self Promotion is Wrong
It has come to my attention that sometimes people use HubPages to promote themselves in disgusting, slimy, self-important ways. They do things like put links in their hubs that are intended to do nothing but drive traffic to their own websites or Facebook pages or other things. It is totally selfish, and doing that sort of thing represents a wanton disregard for propriety and the type of humility that Greek philosophers spoke of and that some of the guys in the Bible wrote about. It’s bad stuff.
For example, if I were to point out that I had recently created a Facebook page under my writing name Shadesbreath (http://facebook.com/Shadesbreath) and then made a big deal out of it by writing a hub pointing to it and making a conspicuous show of all the fun and hilarity that might be had by clicking “like” on such a page, that could only be construed as salacious, smarmy and grotesque. I would never do that. I mean, yes, I did just create that page, and yes it would be awesome if people all went and “liked” it and then played along with all my Shadesbreath reindeer games, but I would never do it. It would be embarrassing to do something like that. It would be like lowering myself to the level of the people who do that. The peasants. The serfs. The rascals, knaves and louts.
Do I seem like the loutish type?
Shadesbreath loutishness poll
Does Shadesbreath seem like the loutish type?
See results without votingClearly not. (As will be proven by the poll to the right in time).
So I felt, having discovered this abominable behavior by some hubbers, that I should speak out on this issue. I felt that someone needed to comment on the degree of narcissism necessary to A) even make such a page, and B) then go about promoting it like some slattern waggling her plump buttocks at drunken sailors as they teeter down the gangplank after six months at sea. So I won’t do that. It would be wrong.
Shadesbreath the slattern ...
Despite how nice it would be to shout to the world: "HEY GO LOOK AT MY PAGE AT: http://facebook.com/Shadesbreath AND MAKE SURE TO LIKE IT,” I would never stoop to that. Nor would I stoop to letting people know it has this really cute picture of a puppy and a kitten snuggling up together that has a funny comment as part of my experiment to see how many "likes" I can get. I wouldn't talk about the hot chick on there or the dreamy dude with awesome abs I put on their either. I just wouldn't mention that because I am not a slattern. And besides, I look terrible in a miniskirt so, frankly, if I tried to do the slattern thing, it wouldn’t work. I look horrible in plaid and half-shirts don't really work for my otherwise awesome physique. Can you say, “Short-bearded Santa in a Japanese schoolgirl uniform?”
You probably can say it, but would you want to?
Now, despite having made it perfectly clear how I feel about that sort of self-aggrandizing behavior, it is possible that some HubPages moderator or another might come along and see my examples as being exactly the sort of thing that I am arguing against. So, it is to those moderators that I first wave and say, “Hi,” and then point out that I am clearly not in support of that kind of overly promotional activity and am in fact, through my examples, helping make their jobs easier. And just to make sure everyone reading this is perfectly clear, I am in no way suggesting that anyone go to Facebook and search for the term Shadesbreath and then click LIKE on the hilariously funny images that come up as part of the clever mechanism I put there to get people to like my page. Anyone who reads this and goes to Facebook and searches for that term, or who clicks on the links that I provided above solely as an example of what not to do has almost missed the point entirely. That said, I simply want to make sure that any HubPages moderator tempted to do evil and cruel things to this helpful and totally pro-HubPages hub understands how totally NOT in any violation this hub actually is despite how in some ways it might be argued that it is a total violation of the most insidious and flagrant kind. I would also like to point out how amazing a job HubPages moderators do, how awesome they are as people and as lovers--I have only heard rumors, but wow, names like Apollo and Jenna Jameson come up as comparisons whenever anyone brings this topic up. So, thanks, moderators, for all you do.
So, that said, I feel I have done my duty in making sure people understand how uncouth and shameful self promotion is, and that I feel anyone attempting to divert traffic from Hubpages to another site like the really clever and actively enjoyable site I mentioned above that can be found by searching Shadesbreath on Facebook but that should not be searched based on this article because of how wrong it would be is, in fact, a knave, lout and all that other stuff I said before.
So there you have it.
Have a lovely day.
A perfect example of the lengths to which people go:
- I need help with shameless self promotion
This is a link to a forum thread that seems to be innocent but yet appears to be tacitly doing the very behavior thing being discussed in this hub. It's sickening if you must know the truth.
If Loving ME is wrong, I don't want to be right...

Shadesbreath.
I'm shocked and appalled that you - of all people - would do such a thing.
In one step, you've taken yourself down to the level of the poor misguided creature at
http://Facebook.com/TheInternetBloke
But YOU. Shadesbreath.
Quite frankly, you disappoint me.
I never thought that you would become so egocentric as to shamelessly promote yourself at http://facebook.com/shadesbreath
I had such high hopes for you when you wandered into Hubpages not so long ago, and I wiped the beer off your chin, changed your nappy, and pointed you in the right direction.
But I guess I was wrong about you after all.
You're just another lowlife, self promotional scumbag. Just like all the rest.
Broken hearted,
Eric G.
Great hub! This has been a rampant problem that I almost wrote about in my last hub, http://hubpages.com/hub/Priced-to-Sell-The-10-Hott but I decided not to. It seemed like a block of hubs pertaining to texting issues, like http://hubpages.com/hub/SMS-Language-and-Etiquette would be a great idea, and require little self promotion, unlike the hub, http://hubpages.com/hub/The-XM25--Revolutionizing- which has gotten even lower of a score than it had when I posted it... Not because its a bad hub, but probably simply because the subject matter is out of favor with the PC crowd... It would be great if people clicked to rate it up, but I'd never dream of posting a comment asking them to do that... That would be extremely unethical! Almost as bad as driving while texting, which is a hub I would never post on a comment screen, but if I did, it would take up about this much space... http://hubpages.com/hub/almost-hm-cya-soonOMG-I-ju
You know, it is OK to circumvent this rule by posting this information on your profile page, but then, how often is that going to be seen? Not even half as much as my new novel, Critical Mass, that is also published here at hubpages, and linkable through the hub, http://hubpages.com/hub/Author-Introduction-to-Cri , but we'll never get an accurate test, since this practice is frowned upon, slimey, and seriously uncool.
Good luck getting the link, http://facebook.com/Shadesbreath out there, maybe someone else can put it on all of their hubs if you put theirs on yours, also circumventing self-promotion... food for thought.
Hey Shades, very nicely done. Definitely worth a laugh or two. :) I hope you enjoy your new page at Facebook. I cannot like it more than once, so you've already got my vote. :) Thank you for sharing. :)
Shadesbreath, you literary slut! haha...good luck with it all.
It did? Jeez...my name must be mud around here.I knew I shouldn't have sent out those 40,000 emails.
This is too funny Shadesbreath. Thank you for demonstrating how horrible all of this mindless self promotions really is. Did you ever notice that the word demonstrate has the word demon in it? As if showing were a bad thing...
Drat and blast - I just can't get the hang of this promotional stuff - I found you on FaceBook and then came here to read the hub! I'm sorry! I'll try to do better next time. By the way, did you friend me on FaceBook yet? :D
Naughty naughty hubbers! You should all be ashamed. I never self promote... unless I get a chance to do so.
With all the other sites I have or write for, like http://thecrustycurmudgeon.com/, I have been tempted to write a selfish self-promoting hub myself, but instead I referred myself to another article I wrote at http://www.suite101.com/profile.cfm/champers108 to remind me that it would be uncool. Or I could have done it for http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sfrm=1, or even some of those on-line newspapers I write for, such as http://chesterfield.patch.com/, http://clayton-richmondheights.patch.com/, or even http://kirkwood-webstergroves.patch.com/. Then there is the magazine where I am a staff writer, http://www.copiamagazine.com/ But you can guess how busy such a shameless self-promotion could be. Anyway, glad to see you're taking the high road!
Ha ha-this whole hub+ comments has put a smile on my face-sorry to be so new to all this that I have nothing to add to the shameless self promotion! Very clever-voted up>
Hes right but as you have now read his hub do pop over and read all of mine !
I guess I will have to share this on facebook warning all my friends about this insidious effort to circumvent the obvious TOS violations and mess with the sexy moderators. (Where is the hub on Jenna?) I keep searching and only come up with 119 hubs. None of them list her as a moderator! LOLZ Well done, I love starting my day with a chuckle.
Gosh! I started reading it and thought to myself, "Eek! New Hubber, you've infringed some rule and about to be reprimanded",
Then I thought, "Pompous bugger, He seemed nice at first"
Then the penny dropped.
An hilariously funny hub. Loved it.
Brilliant! Your hub is clearly showing the errors of self promoting hubbers who should hang their heads in shame..love your honest ethics, what a trooper! Glad you repeated the wrong doing of it by your example many times..sometimes it's needed to ensure the point has not been missed..excellent upstanding work! ;)
Too funny SB. I "liked" your personal page, now I have to go "like" your shameless hussy harlot page too? In that case I command you to reciprocate! So it is written, so it shall be done...
Now it all makes sense; I got an e-mail from Roy Choiniere suggesting that I "like Shadebreath on Face Book".
Since I don't know who Roy is and I never liked you much, I just ignored the invitation. I might be missing out on something really big, but I will take my chances
Man I was laughing so hard that I could not see to read your hub for about twenty minutes. TEARS OF JOY flooded my eyes for I realized that here was a SUPER HERO among the rest of us low-life rubbers!
Praise be to THE GREAT PUNKIN and all the other cartoon gods Known to man for the gift of you insights!
Thanks Shades, the picture of you on the docks, while I am sure is accurate, made me throw up in my mouth. That image will be burned into my skull as much as the bile burns my throat.
A smarmier whore I've never known, Shades. Unfortunately, I chose to 'like' your page. Such smarmy photos. Ugh.
What on earth's next?
I couldn't stop laughing!! I love the Shadesbreath ever since you told me that you like me using the bible to get back at the ones who only know how to quote scripture and that was like 2 years ago. This hub tops it all. In reality--and this is briging it all down Hubpages doesn't like us self promoting even if it is to just get hubs about things that just need exposure and GOD forbid you post one of your hublinks in a forum post!! That will get you banned--been there doen that! FB is a great place to self promote!! LOL LOL LOL!!
This one really resonated with me Shades. I too, like you, abhor self promotion. Take my Killer Ideas for Your Next Hub hub for example. (Notice how I didn't make that a link). That was all about the "little people" - those who are struggling and too dumb to figure out a topic on their own. The fact that it gained me hundreds of followers and thousands of reads was an unintended consequence. And one that I hated. I would never say anything about myself that could be misconstrued as self promotion. The fact that you yourself said that I'm hysterically funny (I think it was "stan, you're a heck of a lot funnier than me. I've decided to quit writing altogether after reading your stuff." - or something like that) means very little to me. See, not only am I against self promotion - I'm against any kind of promotion. I would prefer that my stuff just hung somewhere out in cyberspace, never read by anyone. You obviously feel the same way. Here's hoping that 2011 is a really lonely and unread year for both of us.
My hubs seem to get very litle views too. Oh they will get lots for about a day or two and then the views almost totally vanish. It's been doing that for over a year now.
Shades, I have most of the religious community now telling EVERYONE not to read my hubs because I am taking people from Jesus. Go figure, I scare the begeebees out of them but I have never taken someone away from something that can't be given or taken. LOL A messed up bunch if you ask me...but who asks me. I just like to write. http://hubpages.com/profile/Lady+Guinevere
LOL LOL LOL Don't give them too much credit--you know they get big heads and they put themselves on that pedestal thinging they are soooo much better than anyone else. :P
@Laqdy guinevere.
Yes. I really get annoyed at those people who think that they are better than anyone else.
Makes it very difficult for those of use who really are. :-)
SB and Stan are two of the funniest hub writers here! They are naturals. I, on the other hand have to work at it. That's why I charge more for my "funny" hubs. I'm glad we can still read theirs for free :-) But someday, well, we'll have to pay for words like "salacious, smarmy and grotesque"
I really cannot understand why I feel this "need" to do something but I am not sure what it is because the message was really confusing and I think I have been reading subliminal messages but I am not sure why I like Shadesbreath. It's the darnedest thing. Anyways, I gotta go, I have this urge...
I really had to laugh. Satire is your strong point. It worked for me: I hope it works for you. If you weren't such a good and funny writer it would have got me a bit PO'd...to do such a sly bit of the self-promotion you so adamantly abhor in such a tounge-in-cheek way!
Gotch'ya; not as bad as you got me with the the hub about Christoph Reilly, but nevertheless. If I miss-spelt Palin favorite word, sorry. By the way - I like you well enough, should you care to know:-)))
I agree with you Shadesbreath that shameless self-promotion should be stamped out. For example, some people here have been putting their Hubpage links in the comments boxes.
Here's another example http://hubpages.com/profile/shinkicker indicating what I mean. It puts the temptation right there, that blue writing, that nice easy link. BUT yes! You are right people shouldn't do it and others shouldn't encourage them by clicking on the links. I hope I never stoop so low.
Great Hub
Let me say, sir, that I love your stuff. You are one of only five people I currently follow on HubPages. I know from your interactions on the forums and engagement with other people's hubs, that your humor comes from and depends upon your high intelligence -- though you are more than capable of swinging low, if I may put it that way.
I love the image of you in a mini-skirt and one of those "Daisy Duke" (Dukes of Hazard, remember that show?) shirts. This is because such people, who use HubPages in the way you outline here, are precisely prostituting themselves. No, its not like the actual prostitution service spam we sometimes see on the Q & A forum, but the same lack of dignity is involved.
In fact, such shameless self-promoters are treating the HubPages community like a big, collective potential "John."
Still, the Internet is a relatively new experience; and there is something about its nature that either causes some people to forget how to be civil human beings or acts as an electronic universal multiplier and extension device to share their inherent rudeness, bigotry, and loutishness.
Anyway, you did another really good job taking a straightforward subject and presenting it in a novel and entertaining (and educational) way. I voted this hub up for awesome and funny!
Take it easy.
I agree totally Shadesbreath, now if you go to Amazon and type in Cindy Vine you can find my books as paperbacks or kindle
Actually, that little ditty is quite good for something you came up with on the fly!
Take it easy. :D
@Eric, you are too cool! LOL
@Shinkicker, I have to get around to realing more of your hubs. I've been so busy with Life.
@Shadesbreath, You are the funniest or one of the top.
Now this thing about self promotion--who the heck else is going to do it--we are!! DOH! HP and google are really funny. LOL LOL LOL NOT!
I think many people use article directory from promoting their site etc so I personally do not think anything is wrong with it, as long as it is done without looking spammy.
I do not have facebook account rightnow, else I can join in too. Thanks for 30 minutes hub challenge, this was first ever for me! It was rushed but felt good.
Out of this entire article, one main point stands out to me. It was this: "promoting it like some slattern waggling her plump buttocks at drunken sailors". So my question is, do my hubs make my hips look big? If I typed at an angle, would it be less noticeable? After 6 months at sea, do sailors really care about the size of a slatternly caboose? See, these are deep and thought-provoking questions and while I enjoyed your hub immensely, I do not believe you addressed these points.
lol
Wonderful! I have reeled in another one!
Before I read this hub, I was afraid it would be lambasting people like me who have occasionally asked someone to read one of their hubs. I should have known that was not your style!
The drawing of "Shadesbreath the Slattern" is a masterpiece! I can see it hanging in the Louvre.
I have been told I must join Facebook in order to read anything there, and I understand it is very difficult to get out of Facebook once you have joined. Thus, I won't be able to follow the rest of your self-promotion. Sob!
Rated up and funny.
What a trip it would be to see some of your drawings in the Louvre! A dramatic change from the Mona Lisa.
I am glad you confirmed what I had heard about Facebook. The little bit I have seen is not my thing: family pictures, pictures of parties, etc. While I realize much data is out there on me, at least I can refrain from sharing my personal life with hundreds of "friends." After all, I am "mysterylady."
Exellent examples, Shadesbreath. You are definitely standing firmly on the ground. With BOTH feet!
Would you please spare a few minutes every week and recommend us a few spam-free hubs that inspired/informed YOU? New and old alike.
Compared with numerous hub lists that often tend to index unique, new or simply popular hub pages, the complex list we are preparing will simply quote the best HubPages ever published, regardless of their popularity, uniqueness or age. They will be objectively selected by reviewers who think out of the box (so far six of us). We have even detached ourselves from our personal hubs to guarantee impartial and truly independent hub reviews. As far as everyone is concerned, we are all new here and we have absolutely no friends at HubPages (of course, we shall keep it that way). Only the top HubPages can therefore make it in the 'Best HubPages' list, not just our friends' ones and those hubs that correspond with our individual preferences.
Once more, could you please spare a few minutes every week and keep our feet on the ground by recommending only those hubs that meet your high demands?
When a simple link would have suffice / The brain on a stick thought otherwise / Not one to let opportunity simply pass by / This hub should be rated "A" for Audacious :)) "Audentes fortuna juvat "
If you carry on like this Shades, a certain hubber won't let you wear his coloured hat. Congrats on even figuring out how to get going with facebook. I take my hat off to you (It's not a black hat). I got on to facebook but forgot my password again. Best of luck in your noble crusade.
Does this hub contain self promotion? Hadn't noticed. Great hub!
I suppose I'm guilty of this, as well ... to a small degree. I have banner-links to my Web Builder site at the bottom of many of my hubs.
The irony is; I'm taking a Web design class and now consider that site to be crap.
... I've definitely got to take those banners down!
I have noticed SOME people doing outrageous self-promotion. But as for me, I have been far too busy publishing my latest addition to slang I have absolutely stopped using and so I haven't even had a chance or the desire to self promote. What will we do about all those shameless slutty people who insist on strutting their egos without permission?
Damn, I clicked on to the wrong thingy me thing again. I was trying to vote for hubnuggets. Gotta get a grip of this hub business.
Shades, it def is. Cos really I was trying to access a free porn site. This is gonna go viral.
Can I have %5 of sales if I inadvertantly click on some other dodgy sites and leave your url. Wow, I wrote url, I am getting the hang of this seo business. Next thing I will be writing(printing) in blue ink.
Everyday I stumble upon something useful and amazing. Thank you! I will be reading it again just to really absorb the next time.
Made me chuckle.... needed that too!
Thanks for pointing out the violation of shameless self promotion and most importantly that it is wrong. Whew your a real moral leader and to that I say hats off! I must say I will be very careful not to click on the example links you so carefully provided as a learning troll, oh I mean tool... :)
Wow I haven't read your stuff lately and I decide to read this one, mainly because I've been feeling guilty about putting too many self-promoting links in my hubs and I'm a glutton for punishment. I recently went over the ugly "3-link" limit and was sorely chastised by the hubteam, but this made me feel worthy again. Thanks. Nice FB site btw. Is that you in the third photo?
Hey - great self promotion :-)
You made me laugh mister!
You just earned a new hub stalker :)
Genius Shades, I know you would never dream of self-promoting, after all you have no need to when your reputation precedes you :)
I may be fairly new here, but I had a feeling this would be your stance on this issue. You're just far too serious and buttoned up to ever dirty yourself in such a manner! Good for you on standing up on that soap box!
Such a pity about that facebook page though. It could've gotten a good following with some flagrant self-promotion! ;)
Okay! Okay! I'll admit it! Despite your wishes to the contrary, I went to see your FB page. However, being the prude that I am, your scantily clad pics (not of you, of course LOL) just didn't hook me. It was the cute little puppy and kitten that got the job done :D
You seem to be lacking somewhat in self confidence. Go ahead, put yourself out there: you have nothing to lose!
Great hub! Very interestingly written.
Cute, I like it!
Thanks for educating people on unethical promotion on hubpages.

Why do I get the feeling that I've missed something important? I really hate these 24 hour days. Between work, my farm and World of Warcraft (by the way CATACLYSM is freaking awesome! I just love this new goblin race)...how am I supposed to pay attention to pertinent topics like what is a current HP violation or not? But are you serious...or just yanking some chains?
